When the motion blur effect was added to the ‘Orange Box’ games, ‘Day of Defeat’ was on the list for an upgrade as well. They continue to improve upon their Source engine, and they don’t just save it for their new releases. Killing 1,000 people with the sniper rifle got you the marksman badge, and kill capture allowed you to take a screenshot of yourself getting killed if you thought it necessary. When the ‘Orange Box’ game package came out, a variety of features, including awards and kill capture, were added to almost all of Valve’s multiplayer games. You would think a game that’s almost five years old would gradually fade off the map, but no, Valve continues to add new features from some of their newer releases. By including all the favorite weapons classes, including the bazooka class and – everyone’s favorite – the sniper class, there’s always a new way to kill some Nazis (or Allies). On top of looking nice, a well-balanced distribution of weapons keeps fairness at a maximum while still allowing for some variety. The Source engine is very scalable, allowing for many gamers to run it despite the age of their computers, and the game play is pristine. To this day, ‘Day of Defeat: Source’ is probably one of the most versatile and best-looking online multiplayer WWII games. Dubbed ‘Day of Defeat: Source’ (after the game engine it uses), it is now a stand-alone game included in many of the ‘Half-Life 2’ value packs available today. Then, years after Valve released its sequel to ‘Half-Life,’ ‘Half-Life 2,’ ‘Day of Defeat’ got overhauled, redesigned and renamed. ‘Day of Defeat’ started out as an expansion for Valve’s hit first-person shooter ‘Half-Life.’ A simple download got you a World War II skin for online multiplayer battles. ‘Day of Defeat,’ for example, has gone through various stages – kind of like a butterfly, but in this case, it was beautiful to begin with. Valve, a video game developer, is one of the few who continue to add modifications and updates to games that are almost a decade old. Most games lack replay value, and very few games continue to get updates years after their release dates unless newer versions are released. Some weird ambiance sounds for the Nebelwerfer. In an attempt to keep from going crazy while waiting for new releases of video games, many gamers turn to older, more familiar games for their fix. Interestingly, this is the only cut weapon that seemingly had a completely unique sound set, including reload sounds. It would seem the cut mortar class of the original Day Of Defeat was possibly going to be featured in Day Of Defeat Source but like its predecessor, it was cut before release. The presence of a Grease Gun in the files could have also meant that an American paratrooper faction was going to be added as well but was also cut. The iconic American SMG, the "Grease Gun" was supposed to make a return but was scrapped with only its audio entry remaining. Interestingly, the weapon uses the same sounds as the in-game P38 possibly suggesting it may have been the original sidearm of choice for the Wehrmacht. The iconic German sidearm was apparently also going to be featured in the game but was removed with only its audio entry remaining. This weapon also features placeholder reload sounds like the FG-42. All that remains of this gun is its sound entries inside game_sounds_weapons.txt. The K43 semi-automatic rifle for the Germans was apparently destined to make a return in DoD:S but was removed for unknown reasons as it likely would have been a good counter to the M1 Garand. Interestingly all the reload sounds of the two are set to that of the Thompson, although these were likely a placeholder as the other cut weapons share the same reload sounds. All that remains of these guns are their sound entries inside game_sounds_weapons.txt. These weapons were supposed to be usable by German paratroopers like that of the first game, but the faction these weapons were made for were also removed. The famous side-loading German paratrooper's rifle, and marksman variant, were supposed to make a return but were both cut from the final game.
